@corinne_podger @iroughol @baekdal @sparkyannc Yeah, there’s a real danger that self-employment means working for your worst manager ever. :-)
@corinne_podger @iroughol @baekdal @sparkyannc @omandhb It’s one reason that I suspect that the indie creator — media artisan? 😉 — route won’t be for everyone. The mental health demands are huge. Much respect to @baekdal for sticking it out and making it work.
@corinne_podger @iroughol @baekdal @sparkyannc @omandhb But to loop back to @Iroughol’s original point, people subscribing and unsubscribing — putting their own money down for my content — has made me feel more exposed and vulnerable than any other paid activity in those 9 years of self-employment.
@corinne_podger @iroughol @baekdal @sparkyannc Still, it did incentivise me to completely rethink my courses to be delivered online AND to add a paid element to @omandhb, which couldn’t support me yet, but which is (slightly) profitable for the first time in its 18 years online!
@corinne_podger @iroughol @baekdal @sparkyannc I’m nine years in now, and I’ve been through the cycle a lot — but the loss of work a year ago was by far the worst. The first time I genuinely worried that I might not be able to feed my family. (We could scrape by on my wife’s salary — but it would have been very tight.)
@iroughol @corinne_podger @sparkyannc — and I’m only looking on it as supplemental income. I’m sure it must be much worse if you’re hoping it will become self-sustaining. Happy to chat sometime, if only for the “you’re not alone” aspect of it.
@iroughol @corinne_podger @sparkyannc I’ve got to say — launching a paid element to my site has been an absolute roller-coaster. The trail of the last year have knocked my self-confidence badly anyway, and putting yourself on the line like that is hard. It does feel very personal
@COGS_parish Hello! Just trying to track down all the church social media accounts - I’m wondering if anyone is still getting notifications for this account?
@baekdal The Hey email service already does it - so it must be feasible. The question isn’t so much the feasibility but how watertight it is. But then, “we’re working to circumvent Apple’s privacy settings” ain’t a great look…
@baekdal Indeed, but people figured out workarounds quickly, and Google never really made a point of addressing the workarounds. Apple has more of a marketing incentive to drive the arms race.
I mean, I wish they didn’t, but I can’t see them letting this one go.
@baekdal Devs have the betas now, so we’ll get some sense of how well it’s working soon. (But it won’t be top of many’s list for looking at.)
But, yeah, arms race starts now.
Newsletter open rates RIP 2021.🪦 Killed by Apple.
See you, open rates. It was good while it lasted. #newsletters
@iroughol Although now soon-to-be rendered obsolete, thanks to Apple. t.co/7xOzF6TG1…
So, newsletter folks, how do you feel about Apple killing off open rate tracking?
@Pieandapint It’s true though. The hypocrisy runs deep in them.
@MarcSettle 1. Read the previews on Apple.com 2. Scan the hashtag #WWDC21 3. Pour a beer 4. Watch the keynote when the replay is available 5. Try to ignore my wife’s mocking commentary.
@MarcSettle Same here - trying to catch up now.
In an ever-changing world, people getting their hopes up for hardware announcements at WWDC and being disappointed is a constant. #WWDC21
@MarcSettle Way at the bottom of this: apple.com/ios/ios-15-pre…
@petren @MattieTK Apple just Sherlocked my blog post from earlier. 🤷🏼♂️
Where I led… 😉
It’s been interesting seeing lots of people switching to @ghost. I’m feeling vindicated in my longer advocacy of the platform and the team behind it.
