@iTibz @shana_weisberg That’s gonna cost you, mate… :-)

An engaged newsletter audience is better than a big one.

(And I managed to write it without making a “size isn’t everything” joke. Apart from that one, obviously.) onemanandhisblog.com/2021/06/an-eng…

In the old days we used to call them “splogs” — short for “spam blogs” — because they just used off-the-shelf blog software and an RSS importer to suck in content and republish it, with loads of ads on the page. The tech might change, but the underlying approach is the same.

And, inevitably, both the comments on the piece are spam. 🙄

What’s shocking about this article (found via ⁦@EstherKeziaT⁩ and the @mediavoicespod⁩’s newsletter) is not that it’s happening, but that it’s been happening for over 15 years, and the industry is only just waking up to it. pressgazette.co.uk/website-duplic…

@JoannaG In fact, he did a collaboration with the novelist Alistair Gray.

And to think, we used to paint Citadel miniatures together back in the day…

@JoannaG A friend of mine did a law degree, abandoned it, and retrained as an artist. He’s now a successful public artist.

@aaranged @msaveski OoooooooooooOOOOOOooooooh. This is highly relevant to my interests. Thank you.

If only people shared news like this with the same enthusiasm that they shared “we don’t know if infection will confer lasting immunity” last year: nytimes.com/2021/05/26/hea…

This is very encouraging news that vaccines really are our way out of this. 💉>🦠

Or, perhaps, an exploration of why we sometimes misjudge our coverage of big stories, simply because they’re big stories and there’s nothing that gets our adrenaline firing like that…

In back-to-back tutorials with students today, but, if you missed them, you might enjoy my piece about the problems of assuming our readers understand culture jargon like, well, “culture war” and “cancel culture”…

This is a great, if depressing, thread digging into the problems of having senior editors who:

(A) Understand social media is important (B) Don’t understand the dynamics of social media twitter.com/JessicaHuseman…

@dmitryshishkin @CScottVideo @Clubhouse @ImKevinYoung @newsrw Yeah, the sheer speed with which it’s been cloned into other products where you have existing social graph (plus, arguably, the speed with which Clubhouse itself has become polluted with self-promoters), is making it feel very like Meerkat 2.0.

@dmitryshishkin @CScottVideo @Clubhouse I got a notification yesterday, and it made me feel nostalgic for the “early days”. That must be a record from launch to irrelevance…

@Emmafmagnus (Not books, obvs, but some fantastic short films about that kind of stuff).

Journalism needs its own period of reflection and self-inquiry after the last year of COVID: onemanandhisblog.com/2021/05/journa…

(With hat-tips to @charlotteahenry and @JoannaG for inspiration, rather historically in the latter case…)
