Here’s a rarity — a blog post from 12 years ago, and all the links still work…
Online culture is now just culture: Dominic Cummings References Spider-Man-Pointing Meme To Parliament bleedingcool.com/comics/dominic…
Well, now. Amazon Makes Deal To Buy MGM For Nearly $8.5 Billion npr.org/2021/05/26/100…
@Bill_Bowkett Waiting for his opportunity… t.co/TVCUz1f5x…
I rather suspect that, given the very low opinion the public hold of Cummings after his Barnard Castle excursion, his criticism of Johnson might actually help the PM rather than hurt him…
Two down. 😭
@rainbowbex Although you do raise a good point, because I suppose the exact same accusation could be made about the phrase “Extremely Online”…
So, just published a post which I thought would cost me readers. Only one gone so far, which is better than expected… 🤞🏻
@sofiavictoriad Gratz!
Culture jargon is still, well, jargon. And jargon is rarely a good way to connect with a widening reader base: onemanandhisblog.com/2021/05/cultur…
This is a really handy break down of some of the defining edits in the social media video vernacular: vulture.com/2021/05/best-o… #interhacktives
@corinne_podger @richardkendall I did have one lot done back in 2013: onemanandhisblog.com/2013/02/keepin…
@corinne_podger @richardkendall I have paper copies of all the mags somewhere, but it’s not the same as being able to link them online. I had all my student mags nicely bound by a bookbinder. Need to do the same with my mid-90s work.
@corinne_podger @richardkendall Yup.
Although that said, pretty much my entire professional output between 1997 and 2005 is behind an expensive paywall. (My pre-1997 work was never online to start with…) Paywalls create that issue without link rot. Important young people maintain their own archive.
@charleswhite3 Agreed. But I think it’s worth noting that some scientists are just working in the trenches and some are doing a very good job of putting themselves in the public eye, and the Venn of those two does not overlap much.
@TAC_NISO Maybe I’m missing something here, but I thought it was part of the fundamental design of the web that URIs were meant to be a form of persistent identifier?

@charleswhite3 But this doesn’t match with public expectations of The Science.
@charleswhite3 Two things:
- So, so many scientists aren’t on Twitter - not really their natural habitat
- As someone married to an immunologist, they fight like weasels in a sack over interpretation of data. It’s good and healthy and part of the scientific method.
Good thread here on the problem with getting your understanding of current pandemic events from Twitter. twitter.com/zeynep/status/…
@ant1973 With all due respect, blog off! 😉

I will never cease to be amazed by the speed with which my daughters can make our living room chaotic.
@corinne_podger @richardkendall Arguably it’s more about the calibre/awareness of the tech and product people we hire, than the journalists. But I still think most journalists undervalue historic content - and its economic value, especially as it’s all already paid for…
@corinne_podger @richardkendall Last year I did some work with a broadcaster client who had moved their site to a new domain but had only done the most cursory redirects. 😱 Link rot everywhere and completely hosed their SEO.
