I declared RSS bankruptcy last night, marked the 5,000+ articles which were unread in NetNewsWire as read, and revelled in the manageable flow of new posts. Such a great decision.

Great post by Matt Genmell on why we should give ourselves permission to write shorter, less weighty posts in blogs. Some of this is down to platform design: micro.blog and Tumblr encourage short posts in a way that, say, Wordpress doesn’t. mattgemmell.scot/write-less/

@callummarius 💯 on-brand thread.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of City’s Creatives in Residence scheme. city.ac.uk/about/schools/…

@cjmaill Yup, although I suspect they weren’t thinking of “breaking other people’s services and businesses”

@jonhew Basic tweet embedding will be fine. Tweets in newsletters will require $$$, and I imagine services like Followerwonk and other API-based free analysis apps will be dead.

I’m a bit worried I’ve buried the lede on this one: I suspect Twitter paywalling its API from next week will have a bigger impact than anyone expects.

Today’s post:

  • The curious lack of followup on the campaign to end the agricultural bird site (if you know, you know)
  • The death of Gawker 2.0
  • And the genius behind the Bash Street Kids is no more

I have 300 open tabs on my iPad. Tonight, I wage war on them. (By “wage war” I mean “read and decide if I’m going to blog about them”, of course.)

@kaitewelsh @thekateblack @LolaKeeley_ That is GENIUS.

@erika_marzano Happy New February!

It’s reader feedback day on @omandhb. @petren pulls me up on my numbers, and @desibility points out the thinness of one of my arguments…

Plus I have an editorial assistant for the day…

Instagram’s co-founders are launching a “TikTok for news” - it looks like an algorithmic news aggregator, basically.

Worth watching, but not making me excited yet.
