Journo (and journo-adjacent) friends: what’s on your autumn /lockdown 2.0 reading list?

(Looking for suggestions to break me out of my “all nature writing all the time” phase.)

@RichardGillis1 At least they have online coffee sales. I worry for my local coffee shop, @tomfoolerycc.

One thing from the before times I really miss: just grabbing my laptop or iPad and heading to a coffee shop to work for an hour or two.

If home working turns into a long-term trend, I guess we’ll have to find ways of recreating those social lifelines.

@resophonick Catalina was certainly a less smooth upgrade than this one was. In fact, I actually ended up doing my first ever MacOS reinstall after a few months, and that solved some lingering issues. It’s probably worth hanging on for 11.1, though, given you’re clearly in no rush. :-)

@resophonick Catalina.

First impressions of Big Sur: amazingly fast on my ancient 2013 MacBook Pro. The visual refresh takes a little getting used to, but it’s close enough to the current iPad look that it feels fairly familiar.

A couple of hours in, and I haven’t hit any problems yet.

@arnehulstein Yes - abandoned the attempt last night, and it all ran much more smoothly this morning.

@BruceRedux I have to confess that I don’t use anything but the native controls these days - I found blockers were interfering too much with things I have to do for my work.

@BruceRedux I’m liking the UI refresh. Seems snappy even on my late 2013 MacBook Pro, so all positive so far.

Hello, Big Sur.

The balance of my wardrobe has changed during the eight months of lockdowns and remote working. I wear far fewer smart jackets, shirts and jumpers, and far more sustainable outdoors gear.

I like this change.

Looks like the Big Sur update is in the process of completely hosing Apple’s online services.

The company normally handles these peaks of demand much better. I wonder what went wrong? 9to5mac.com/2020/11/12/app…

@Whatleydude Journalism Twitter’s just as bad TBH.

@sarah_orme @sophiasgaler I’m not sure there is a sweet spot on WFH. My wife and I had to bribe our daughters with 40 minutes of iPad time earlier in the week, because I had a training course to deliver at the same time my wife had a lecture, due to a cock up on the diary front.
