Here’s one way to look at Facebook in a culture war context: the conflict is already there, Facebook is just an arms dealer. onemanandhisblog.com/2020/07/facebo…

@st3f Yup. I don’t disagree. I’m just making the point that if you just get rid of the arms dealer, you haven’t solved the underlying conflict yet.

@sofiadmateus @POLITICOEurope Congratulations!

And today, how about a little perspective of the Facebook hate - and a note of caution on the Substack love? onemanandhisblog.com/2020/07/facebo…

It’s important, I think, to distinguish between problems #Facebook is causing, and those which it is merely amplifying.

Much as I dislike Facebook, it’s not to blame for toxic behaviour online. It’s merely accelerating it: onemanandhisblog.com/2020/07/facebo…

@MarcSettle It’s all about the intake - we’ve dropped to two meals a day through lockdown, plus a small supper for the girls. And I’ve just about maintained activity levels.

This idea comes up like clockwork every year or so. It’s not great for two reasons:

  1. People are quite capable of behaving terribly under their own name and photo, so it doesn’t do what you expect. (1/2) twitter.com/JamesMelville/…

  1. Anonymity (or pseudonymity) is often essential for whistleblowers, or vulnerable or marginalised people.

The problem is that Twitter gives you a large audience quickly if you behave in attention-seeking ways. Removing the Retweet button would have more impact.

One unexpected - but happy - side effect of lockdown: I’m now wearing jeans of a waist size I haven’t managed to squeeze into since my 20s.
