@MarcSettle Hmm. Not so far as I can see, after a quick test.

I think people are asking the wrong question about Apple News+. It’s clearly not going to be THE answer to funding journalism. But can it be a valuable part of a mix of answers for a publication? That’s the real question.

Grim news. twitter.com/g_piechota/sta…

@MarcSettle Aye. As a super early adopter of 1, their batteries were getting rather limited and I couldn’t face going back to wires.

@MarcSettle That’s a trying view to look at for 1019 years.

Finishing up my take on Apple News+ and how audience engagement / audience growth types should think about it. It’ll be going out in my paid newsletter later on today. As always, DM me you e-mail for a one-off preview of it, if you haven’t had one before!

@jbenton @NiemanLab And with those points of contact lost, trust erodes. And the big, important civic stuff suffers from that, too. The public don’t make the clear distinctions we do, and the world of journalism is more interconnected than we allow, sometimes. (2/2)

@jbenton @NiemanLab But possibly a too simplified view of reality. By the very nature of mainstream reporting, it’s very distant from most people’s lives. The collapse in local and specialist media has done much to remove regular encounters with journalists from many people’s lives. (1/2)

@jbenton Fair enough. But it’s deeply demoralising for hard working journalists in all sorts of fields to be looked down on by others in their profession just because they’re not labouring in the rarified fields of hard news. And I find that disappointing from @NiemanLab.

@jbenton Indeed - but that civically-important hard news can, and is, delivered through magazine format publications just as well as via traditional newspapers. And mixing the two actually makes it more likely that people will eat their news greens, as well as their lifestyle fries.

This is a decent piece of analysis on what Apple News+ actually is, but I do find the implied snobbery about magazines off-putting. This “mainstream” news exceptionalism is an endemic problem in the industry we need to get past. niemanlab.org/2019/03/apple-…

Got to say, I’m most excited for Apple Arcade. There’s some games I want to play in there, starting with Beyond a Steel Sky.

@hj_davies Undisclosed in the presentation. No details on how the revenue is split between publishers yet.
