Lessons from Welsh hyperlocals - my liveblogged notes from the #NISCDF by @raehowells and @RichardGurner and moderated by @EmmaMeese onemanandhisblog.com/2018/10/welsh-…

I have to say - that last panel discussion was a little depressing. Nothing really new mentioned, and signs that the industry is still grappling with understanding the basics of digital. #NISCDF

Perhaps not surprising to hear representatives of the big local publishers either dismiss hyperlocals or describe them as competition. These are two very different ideas of news. #NISCDF

Chartbeat and Parse.ly are great tools - but tend to bias you towards realtime news, rather then evergreen content. Both matter. #NISCDF

Find it really hard to believe that it’s the first time ever - I bet Google was top in the early 2010s, or the last 2000s at the very least. Facebook only reached industry dominance circa 2012/3. #NISCDF twitter.com/C4CJ/status/10…

Now, @mary_annastle is alluding to a key point - social media is about more than distribution - it’s about relationship building and communication with an audience. #NISCDF

Most worrying comment from this #NISCDF panel: “we’re doing the same stories with different tools”. Uh… that’s a BIG problem.

Finally writing the three new training course descriptions I’ve been itching to launch for months.

Let’s hope people are itching to go on them, too!

@benwhitelaw @chrismoranuk Useful - thank you, Ben. I have lots of anecdotal support for that, but not much hard research yet.

I suspect this is indicative of how people crave “rules” they can follow, rather than doing the hard work of looking at the attention needs of their specific audience. (The whole, short thread is worth reading). #interhacktives twitter.com/chrismoranuk/s…

@benwhitelaw @chrismoranuk The evidence I’ve seen is that it’s a massive over-simplification of an underlying truth about “reader modes". And that absolute numbers are not at all useful, because they seem to vary wildly from publication to publication (and thus, audience to audience).
