@ianjsilvera 10/10. No Notes. 😉
@ianjsilvera So, platforms as a concept, rather than individual platforms.
@ianjsilvera Broadly, likely to welcome the concept of your publishing being highly dependent on platforms (Owens) rather than deeply committed to the idea of directly owning your audience and tools (Baekdal). I’m on the Baekdal end of the scale, but with a bit more openness to platforms.
About to make my first on-site reference to my mental Baekdal/Owens scale of media analysis. The @baekdal end of that scale being the most platform sceptical and the @simonowens being the most platform positive.
Still figuring out where @charlotteahenry and @Ianjsilvera fit.
The one thing they have to fix is forcing people to subscribe to a newsletter to follow the author on Notes.
It’s a two-step conversion: start with following their Notes, and, if they prove compelling enough, then subscribe to their newsletter. I bet that would convert more.
Substack Notes: first impressions: microblog.onemanandhisblog.com/2023/04/12/sub…
Also, no alt text on images. C’mon, @SubstackInc - even in an early launch, accessibility should be key.

Substack Notes: exactly like Twitter, but you have to subscribe to people’s newsletters to follow them.

“Dad, I forgot to add Frozen songs to my playlist. Can I have more iPad time to sort it?” “Hazel, that idea? Let it go.” “DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD! Worst Dad joke ever.” “Thank you.”
The platform’s always been great at PR stunts, but picking a fight with Musk may well backfire.
And it’s been disappointing to see writers I respected going all in on Substack Notes.
Putting all your eggs in one basket is a dumb move - even at Easter… 🐣
I’m so tempted to write more about this - but would prefer to survive until my 21st wedding anniversary…
On holiday this week (20th wedding anniversary!) and trying to avoid media news (hence no @omandhb posting) but I couldn’t resist this great poke at Substack’s finances from @JayCoDon.

Nice to be writing it again after a three month hiatus. Of course, the question is: will anyone read it?

358 tabs open on my iPad Pro. I suspect my Easter project should be cleaning them down.
(It was over 400 before my morning coffee.)
This piece from Robin Sloan is looking more prescient by the day: the last decade’s platforms are over. robinsloan.com/lab/new-avenue…
