The past: a group of innovators, most of them outside journalism, (@benthompson, @DMWeisberg, @cbzakin) hack some CMS, payments and email tech together to launch successful niche publishing businesses. Journalism largely ignores them, because they don’t look like journalism.

The recent past: a few people (@revue, @SubstackInc, @Ghost), seeing this model at work, realise there is a technology job to be done here, and build platforms to make it easier, by integrating CMS, distribution and payment.

@shazzcozz I actually wrote about this a few months back, for a distant branch of the Accenture empire: nextconf.eu/2020/05/real-e…

Lo! There comes a Toast Cat! t.co/ZoT7ZThUj…

@michellemanafy I’ve a single client that has been with me since I went independent in 2012. They’re based in Hamburg, but we use a combination of Slack and regular video calls to bounce ideas around and keep each other updated.

People confuse habit with necessity.

@jopayton Apparently the “oven-ready deal” lacked an oven to bake it in.

Whoo. I hadn’t realised that I’d ended up as the featured snippet on Google for searches around @Ghost’s membership features. That explains why I’m getting steady search traffic to it… t.co/AFaz8zGe9…

@erika_marzano @JenniferBrandel @EBU_HQ Retweeted for the Sisko gif, mainly.

So, I thought I had the whole 20 seconds hand washing things sorted. And then the Apple Watch update with hand washing tracking hit. A month later, I finally have 20 seconds of Apple-approved hand washing cracked. 🥳👍🏻

FYI @jonostrower twitter.com/ConfedMatthew/…

@jonostrower Trust me, the step beyond that is “theoretical’”.

@digidickinson @paulbradshaw Campaign-level NPC villain. Clearly.

@rasmus_kleis @dragz It’s… true, isn’t it? t.co/HZtjsknnq…

@paulbradshaw Chaotic evil, all the way. t.co/Vyy4p3eay…

A thread worth your time, chaps. twitter.com/holly/status/1…

@rasmus_kleis @dragz I’m… chaotic evil, it appears.

Yes, we’re doing it all over again, says @mathewi analysing the media and its role in the US presidential election: cjr.org/the_media_toda… via @cjr

@michellemanafy My wife commented recently that the pandemic proved to be something of a musical chairs moment. You were stuck (for a while) wherever you were when the music stopped.

That looks like a good chair to be stuck on!

@GlenBMulcahy @mediavoicespod It seems to be pretty much all data analysis tools, of various sorts, including text-focused ones.

@michellemanafy Stunning view!

This is… worrying. twitter.com/MarietjeSchaak…

@jamesrbuk @melvillehouse Blimey! Back when I wrote gaming books, you got three copies, and that was yer lot!

@abigailedge @chrismsutcliffe @mediavoicespod Eg: bluemic.com/en-gb/products…

@abigailedge @chrismsutcliffe @mediavoicespod I second the Yeti. Except mine is in Black. They come in a variety of colours! I’d consider shelling out a little extra for the boom arm and pop filter, though.

One lesson I learnt nearly two decades ago in the early days of blogging that you can apply to anything from Twitter to newsletters: look to see if people are merely promoting themselves, or if they are amplifying others.

Once you start doing that, it can be eye-opening.
