@ShirishMM @ejcnet @ClwstwrCreu It’s great to have people like you telling the industry uncomfortable things they don’t want to hear. Far too much discussion is “in the bubble”.
This very nicely describes the module @SarahMarshall and I teach at @cityjournalism for the @Interhacktives. But yes, more to be done. twitter.com/hwise29/status…
@TimothyHolmes @wishcrys No, but I will now. Thank you.
Some thoughts from this morning’s #NISAudience sessions by @eliserwjohnson1, @FraZaffarano, @patweinhold, @JulieLelievre and @ShirishMM: onemanandhisblog.com/2020/10/tiktok…
@DianaPetrolo 🔥
Hard to disagree with @ShirishMM’s assertion that the too cosy relationship between politicians and journalists is hampering our storytelling. #nisaudience We need to focus more on the reality of people’s lives.
I write about the role of context on @omandhb a couple of weeks ago: onemanandhisblog.com/2020/09/engage… #NISaudience
YES. In the digital age, context is one of the most important things we can add. Contextualise the story. #NISaudience

@djknowles22 Ah-ha. The reunion of your #interhacktives year begins… Congratulations.
@erika_marzano Ah, that would have been too easy, wouldn’t it?
Interesting start to the #NISaudience workshop: @ShirishMM is describing what I sometimes describe as “the tyranny of the press” — we’re so obsessed by legacy forms of journalism, designed around print or broadcast formats, that we lose track of the central core of journalism.
@erika_marzano Phone-based VPN spoofing location?
@erika_marzano That’s the bit that always unsettles me: how very dependent any reach is on that algorithm. Too many scars from Google algorithm changes, Facebook algorithm changes… #NISaudience
Interesting: @PatWeinhold makes the point that Tagesschau (like the BBC) has an imperative to reach audiences. That makes TikTok a fantastic route to the younger market. However, commercial operations need a better justification for invested time. #NISaudience
@SandraDavey2019 Followers are not the same thing as a community, though. Interaction is what makes the community, not passive viewing. That’s the element that seems hard to draw in.
With any new social platform:
- Experiment
- Measure
- Learn
- Refine your experiment
- Repeat
That’s more-or-less the process @patweinhold is describing. Don’t wait for “best practice” - get out there and play. #nisaudience
I’m curious, given how algorithm-driven #TikTok is, how much their viewers/followers actually form any sort of community. ie: is their relationship with the brand, or with TikTok. #nisaudience

@katebevan Think how my (Phd in Immunology) wife has felt for the last six months…
Interesting to hear that @eliserwjohnson1 finds that TikTok viewers/subscribers are hard to convert to other contact points. This is my worry about TikTok - its highly closed nature. #nisauidence
We’re at a point where Facebook and Twitter are being described as “more traditional" platforms by @eliserwjohnson1 at #nisaudience 🤯
