It’ll be interesting to see how quickly his family get tested, given how hard it’s been for the rest of us. If they struggle like everyone else, it’ll make things interesting at the dispatch box on his return… twitter.com/politicshome/s…

I was interviewed by @ioanna_toufexi for @interhacktives in the Before Times. She’s just published it, and you may not be surprised to find that I Have Opinions on #journalism. But it was interesting having someone else draw them out of me…

@sofiavictoriad I contemplated telling my molecular biologist wife about this. But I reckon the resultant explosion could be seen from orbit.

@corinne_podger @EstherKeziaT @Flipping_Pages So a piece built of publishers saying “this is a failure” is essentially a red rag to a bull to me now. 😉

@corinne_podger @EstherKeziaT @Flipping_Pages A little context here: I’ve been at this long enough to have been told “this is a failure, it doesn’t understand us, and won’t be any use to use” by publishers about everything from Twitter & Facebook, smartphones, and even online video…

@corinne_podger @EstherKeziaT @Flipping_Pages Which is why I was trying to define the characteristics for those titles for whom it might work.

@corinne_podger @EstherKeziaT @Flipping_Pages Well, the point is, then say it is. We’re unlikely to get the full rates, but that’s clearly competitive information. And, as I mentioned, I’m aware of publishers for whom it is working, but who would rather keep quiet about that.

None of this means it will work for everyone.

@EstherKeziaT @corinne_podger @Flipping_Pages …particularly one with such surface of consumers, too soon.

@EstherKeziaT @corinne_podger @Flipping_Pages Fundamentally, the lesson of the past decade has been narrowing your acquisition channels is very, very dangerous. Being at the mercy of Google then Facebook has not served the industry well. I think it’s premature to dismiss one way of broadening those channels…

@EstherKeziaT @corinne_podger @Flipping_Pages That was really my major disagreement point with your original piece: I think you drew a wider conclusion that was warranted by the evidence. That’s why I asked abut the WSJ: was it excluded because it didn’t fit the narrative, or because you weren’t aware? Glad it was the latter

@EstherKeziaT @corinne_podger @Flipping_Pages Self-evidently, it doesn’t. I was working on fried egg models on B2B titles 15 years ago, before Apple News (or even the iPhone) were around. But that’s an inversion of the thought process: fried egg models exist. Is Apple News / News+ a good fit for each individual publication?

Finally. t.co/1ki1PxKOm…

This is the last time I’ll write about Apple News+ for the time being I promise.

But to understand it, you need to understand you content. And fried eggs. 🍳
