Speakers include @ElleRudd_, @sallybiddall, @L_A_Kelly, @rachaeldottle and @interhacktives aulumnii @anaclarapaniago and @nimrashahid_. Looks to be a great event!
Good morning, lovely journalism friends. There’s two events on today that are well worth your time. @journalism has a free lunchtime event on the lack of diversity in independent publishing: journalism.co.uk/news-events-aw…
(It seems timely, given the exodus of some trans and other LCBTQ+ writers from @SubstackInc over the last few days.)
And then this evening, the wonderful @Interhacktives audience strategy cohort are running an event on women in digital journalism. eventbrite.com/e/panel-with-d…
That was a good cover. I miss doing covers. t.co/t4hPllghn…
Fine work there by @RuthAddicott (who will still interview anyone, I’m guessing) back in the days when I edited @CUBmagazine last century… t.co/UnJWBKZzc…
I had completely forgotten about all the “go back to the office or you’ll lose your job” messaging from last summer. That was an interesting new low. twitter.com/chrismsutcliff…
@noodlepie 1. I agree 100% 2. This probably means we’re both old.
This looks like perfect @benwhitelaw fodder, if he hasn’t seen it already: stratechery.com/2021/moderatio…
@michellemanafy I will buy one as soon as you get the Redbubble store up.
This seems like a bloody good idea: Hyperlocal news wire service launches (from @behindlocalnews) link.medium.com/U3jtfAypHeb
@michellemanafy I have seen the strategy go well — but only in small, niche and (mainly) B2B newsrooms. Getting it to work in a newsroom like The Telegraph’s will be…
…challenging.
@michellemanafy (And the thing that will really make the difference will be putting in the cultural work to support this approach.)
@michellemanafy To be clear: if what they eventually come up with ends up as pure traffic-related pay, I will be the very first to call them on it. But the evidence we have doesn’t support that reading.
@aliyadotcom There exists a photo of me, wearing a feather boa at a work Christmas party, back in the dark ages. Happily, it was taken on actual film, and I possess the only copy AND the negative.
@richardkendall @chrismoranuk @benwhitelaw Oh, dear lord, so many examples.
@richardkendall @chrismoranuk @benwhitelaw So much potential for fusterclucks in that last sentence. :-)
🎵Temptation…🎵
New (big) version of @Ghost t.co/IOay4w0bK…
@6fish Someone was wrong on the internet. :-)
So, I wrote about the (inaccurate) idea that The Telegraph is contemplating clickbait payments: that’s not supported in what we know. But what they are proposing has its own dangers, and will be really hard to get right without a profound cultural shift: onemanandhisblog.com/2021/03/the-te…
@johndodds @freecloud That is a very good question, and one that is deeply under-explored.
@Flipping_Pages @chrismsutcliffe @mediavoicespod t.co/Zitw9IvXT…
@Flipping_Pages @chrismsutcliffe @mediavoicespod We all know that DS9 is the best. Just be honest.
@chrismoranuk @richardkendall @benwhitelaw As an aside, I love the way “algorithmic commissioning” is just thrown into the piece with this quote, without any further explanation: “Algorithmic commissioning linked to pay is a crime against journalism.”
Feels like an interesting/worrying story lurking there…
@chrismoranuk @benwhitelaw So, in theory, they should lead with the culture change, rather than with the metrics. And that’s why I’m sceptical that they will pull this off. But, equally, framing this as “clickbait payments” is not a useful contribution to the debate about analytics in the newsroom.
