How does journalism survive the Covid-19 crisis?

This. All of this. All of it. twitter.com/tezilyas/statu…

@sofiavictoriad No, they’re still horribly expensive.

@sofiavictoriad Probably. That said, our printer was hardly used until suddenly we found ourselves home schooling to primary schoolers. And now it’s essential.

@NeilMaggs2 @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon Fair point. Teach me to tweet while doing the washing up.

@NeilMaggs2 @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon Twitter is appalling for these multi-thread conversation sometimes.

@NeilMaggs2 @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon Nope - not you. I was replying to Tristan.

@TristanCorkPost @NeilMaggs2 @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon Ah, here was I assuming we were debating the issues in good faith. Clearly not. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Cheerio.

@TristanCorkPost @NeilMaggs2 @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon I understand you don’t agree with what I wrote. But this is sounding more and more personal.

@TristanCorkPost @NeilMaggs2 @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon When did I admit that it was based on a wrong assumption? And I’m not sure I understand what point you are trying to make now?

@NeilMaggs2 @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon Bingo.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon I was warning of this over a decade ago - and particularly the dangers of Facebook. You are literally preaching to the converted here. I applaud you for joining the fight. We need as many people in it as possible. Because it’s been too few of us for too long.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton @ejcnet @girlondon Agreed with every single point bar one. The last most strongly. But no, no navel gazing. Again, you’re making a bunch of assumptions here, which are not accurate. I’m mainly a trainer and lecturer these days, but…

A Facebook memory just reminded me that two years ago I was in the UAE doing some work with @TheNationalUAE and @Joe__Jenks. Flying to driver training? I wonder how long before that’s a possibility again? Months? Years?

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton “Community editor” - sorry, typing this while trying to supervise my little girls, and atop them killing each other with sticks.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton There were consequences of that change - and we’re paying the price now. This is why initiatives like the @ejcnet’s engaged journalism work under @girlondon is so important - it’s capturing the institutional knowledge again, after we squandered it all 10 years ago.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist @benwhitelaw @LauraOliver @alisongow @BethAshton If anything, the industry has actually regressed. In the mid-2000s, we had journalists with job titles like “editor”. They steadily got replaced by social media editors, and then audience growth specialists. The focus changed from community to numbers.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist Ok, but there are people who have been in the trenches of this battle for a long, long time. Think of people like @benwhitelaw, @LauraOliver, @alisongow, @BethAshton and so on. Just because their voices haven’t been taken seriously enough doesn’t mean there isn’t expertise.

@JournoPeter @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist Hateful. Not healthful. Apprantly even my autocorrect is intolerant of “hateful”. 😉

@JournoPeter @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist Yes,the word trolling has suffered from semantic drift. Originally it was intentionally disruptive behaviour designed to provoke a reaction. In many cases the people we’re talking about are genuinely healthful people who fee free to express their views - that’s a distinct issue.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist Well, to be fair, the industry has spent about 15 to 18 years talking about trolling… The naming and shaming was the novel element, not the trolls. What you did was news. Trolling isn’t.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain @newscientist Completely - but fundamental community management techniques apply to both the first two examples. Obviously, spaces you don’t own aren’t under your control - like the very conversation we’re having now. But there are still well-honed techniques for managing interactions there.

@TristanCorkPost @alex_captain If you want to compare battle scars - try the new atheists versus creationists in @newscientist’s comments about 12 years ago. That was brutal - but we got there in the end.

@alex_captain @TristanCorkPost Ain’t that the truth.

@JournoPeter @TristanCorkPost @alex_captain This is only a truly unsolved problem at very large scale, and even there some interesting assistive AI systems are showing promise.
